Some derivatives (e.g., ethanolamine) are also important components of the phospholipids found in biological membranes. It is a constituent of brain proteins and nerve coverings and is also important in the formation of cell membranes. Serine can be also used in cosmetics as a skin moisturizer. Internal production requires adequate amounts of B-3 (niacin), B-6, and folic acid.

Jo Mar sells 100% pure, U.S.P. grade L-Serine in both powder and capsules. The powder is water soluble and weighs about 3.8 grams per level measuring teaspoon. Capsules may contain less than 1% magnesium stearate, an inert ingredient used in the encapsulation process.
